The legends of the Haida people tell how in the beginning the world was dark and the sun was kept hidden in the house of the sky chief. To gain access to the house, the raven transformed himself into a fir needle and was consumed by the chief's daughter when she drank from a stream. Once in the house, he became the woman's child, and tricked the sky chief into letting his new grandson near the sun.
